Why Booking a Maternity Photoshoot is Necessary

So many moms consider booking a maternity photoshoot as a luxury, but it really shouldn’t be. Your session is about so much more than ending up with gorgeous pregnancy photos to show family and friends (although that part is pretty great).

It’s about making space to enjoy the present moment you’re in. You may be a mother already, or even have more children in the future, but you won’t be pregnant with this baby again. It’s also a great opportunity to treat yourself to a pampering experience, like getting your hair and nails done.

But perhaps most importantly, this is a really meaningful moment in your life. You’re bringing another human into this world. If that isn’t worth celebrating and documenting, I simply don’t know what is.

What You Need to Know Before You Book Your Pregnancy Shoot

If you’re thinking of booking a maternity session, you might be wondering when the best time is to schedule it. In my opinion, there is no perfect time to book your shoot. Some moms like to show off their bump as soon as they can, while others prefer to be in the homestretch before capturing this beautiful chapter in their lives. Your decision of when to do maternity photos is all up to you.

There may be certain things you want to have in place before your shoot—for example, having your outfit picked out and your nail appointment booked. That said, the most important thing you can do to prepare for your pregnancy shoot is to come into it with a healthy mindset.

As women, we have a tendency to be way too hard on ourselves. As your maternity photographer, I promise to help put you at ease. You are beautiful, and it’s my job to capture every stunning detail of you and your bump. All you need to do is come with the intention to enjoy whatever this photoshoot means to you.

What to Wear to Your Maternity Session

The question I get asked the most from my maternity clients is what they should wear for their session. I love asking them a question in return to help them decide, which is: What makes you feel beautiful? That’s what you should wear.

Here are some common maternity session outfit choices from moms I’ve worked with before:

  • Comfortable, neutral-toned maxi dresses
  • An oversized white button-up shirt (done up or undone) with white undies
  • A floor-length gown that makes you feel fabulous
  • Your favourite lingerie (best for indoor, boudoir-styled maternity shoots)

I also have an extensive maternity closet for my clients, and you’re more than welcome to it. I have tons of stuff in there, so we can find something suitable for whatever look you’re going for.

Some women prefer a more whimsical, natural look suitable for the outdoors, while others choose a less-is-more look for their boudoir maternity session. No matter what you decide, I promise to make your session magical.

Best Locations for Your Maternity Session in BC

Before you make up your mind on your outfit, I highly recommend nailing down the location for your shoot. This can greatly determine the vibe of your maternity pictures and therefore what outfit (or outfits!) would look best.

Sunshine Coast photographers, such as myself, love capturing our clients at Davis Bay—and for good reason. This long, pebbled stretch of beach coastline can be found just off the Sunshine Coast Highway. There’s a pier that stretches out into the water, and it’s a perfect place to wander while we relax and photograph candid and posed photos during your session.

One of my favourite places for maternity shoots in Sechelt is Snicket Park. It’s a versatile area with trees, trails, and coastline offering panoramic views of the Georgia Strait. Snapping photos of you at this location during sunrise or sunset is going to be the cherry on top of this already captivating landscape.

Is your maternity session in Kamloops? The grasslands that surround the area really set the mood for an outdoor maternity shoot. Just north of Kamloops are the Lac du Bois Grasslands, a protected area that feels miles away from everything. It’s a quiet, sweeping green space, making it a great location to spend time showcasing your bump in front of the camera.

These are just a few notable places, but I also know tons of stunning, private locations for your maternity session in Sechelt (or Kamloops, or elsewhere on the Sunshine Coast). If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, I’m your gal.

I also love working within clients’ homes for their BC maternity photoshoot. Most women who decide to do boudoir maternity sessions (which are so much fun, by the way) choose to do them at home where they feel most comfortable. You don’t need to go anywhere fancy for great photos. With the right lighting and a simple backdrop, we’ll definitely capture some pretty epic pregnancy photos of you.
